PSHCE Overview

Term 4: Careers

In this unit students will study a range of careers. Qualities, skills and qualifications will be discussed in relation to suiting specific pathways and careers. Entrepreneurship is taught with students designing and pitching their own company, application or invention to each other.

The job or series of jobs that you do during your working life.

Enterprise

Eagerness to do something new and clever, despite any risk.

Growth mindset

Is a self-perception or “self-theory” that people hold about themselves

Students discuss how future careers can have an impact on society.

Term 3: Emotional Well being

In this unit students will take the time to think about mental health, managing stress, mindfulness and healthy lifestyles. They will look at how to discuss mental health, the impact of social media and self care.

Gambling

The act or practice of risking the loss of something important by taking a chance or acting recklessly.

Morality

Principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior

Rights

Those things that one is morally or legally entitled to do or have.

Temptation

The desire to do something, especially something wrong or unwise.

Term 5: Introduction to Politics

Students will have an introduction to UK politics in which they will explore what human rights are, and the values which underpin these rights. Students will consider the need for balancing rights in certain circumstances.

Stereotype

A fixed general image or set of characteristics that a lot of people believe represent a particular type of person or thing.

Racism

The belief that people of some races are inferior to others, and the behaviour which is the result of this belief.

Sexism

The belief that the members of one sex, usually women, are less intelligent or less capable than those of the other sex and need not be treated equally. It is also the behaviour which is the result of this belief.

Students to be taught about human rights and how they can use them in an effective way.

Students to use knowledge of human rights and UK politics in a thoughtful manner.

Term 2: Relationships and Sex Education

Students will consider aspects healthy relationships, including from a Christian perspective. Students will consider the qualities and behaviours that they should expect and exhibit in a wide variety of positive relationships (including teams, class, friendships). They will explore what makes an unhealthy relationship and will think about the importance of trust, mutual respect and honesty.

Permission for something to happen or agreement to do something.

Intimacy

Are things that you say or do to someone you have a very close personal relationship with.

Relationships

The way in which people feel and behave towards each other.

Term 6: Digital Influence & Safety

In this term, students will be tackling a range of topics focused on maintaining and improving their use of technology and internet safety.

First aid

Help given to a sick or injured person until full medical treatment is available.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation

A method used to keep someone alive in a medical emergency, in which you blow into the person's mouth then press on their chest and then repeat the process.

Shock

The emotional or physical reaction to a sudden, unexpected, and usually unpleasant event or experience.

Students will focus on their well being, being healthy and how to deal with stress. Working on how to revise, routines and mindfulness.

Understanding mental health can allow individual to support their friends and family around them.

Term 1: Health, risk and peer influence: drugs and alcohol.

In this unit students will consider the implications of substance misuse. They will learn about the long term health effects of drug, alcohol and tobacco misuse on the body, whilst exploring the wider personal and social consequences of misuse. They will consider the effect of peer pressure on teenagers’ lifestyle choice, and also the influence of media.

Alcohol

A liquid that can make you drunk, also used as a solvent and in fuel and medicines.

Addiction

An inability to stop doing or using something, especially something harmful.

Cigarettes

A small paper tube filled with cut pieces of tobacco that people smoke.

Students to understand the negative effect drugs and alcohol can have on the local community.
